Reasons why women are more prone to yeast infection than men
Research indicates that women are more prone to yeast infection as compared to men. After some careful findings, some factors were established to explain why this is so. One of the factors is the anatomical difference between men and women. Women have a short urethra that predisposes them to bacteria unlike men. Vaginal yeast infection is the most common yeast infection amongst women. The high chances of contracting vaginal yeast infection is also contributed by the proximity of the vagina and the anus.
The hormone estrogen is an important hormone in the body of a woman, it is what defines a woman, however an increase in estrogen contributes to women getting infected by yeast. Increase in estrogen alters the PH of the vagina thus creating a favorable environment for yeast to thrive. One cause of increase of estrogen is the use of oral contraceptives. Not all oral contraceptives cause an increase in estrogen but a good number of oral contraceptives cause an increase in the level of estrogen in the body. This explains why most pregnant women and women at the second half of their menstrual cycle. During pregnancy and on the second half period of the menstrual cycle, the level of estrogen increases.
Women are more cautious to their skin complexion and like to look beautiful and attractive at all times unlike men. Women in their teenage and their early 20s find it challenging to maintain a spotless clear skin especially on their face due to acne. So as to get rid of acne and attain that clear, soft and beautiful skin, most women use antibiotics. A continuous use of antibiotics predisposes them to contract yeast infection because antibiotics kill and destroy the friendly bacteria in the intestine that help to keep off the harmful yeast bacteria. Women are also said to be cautious about their health and thus frequently visit the doctor as compared to men. They visit the doctor due to common health problems such as fever, cold and coughs and the doctor administers antibiotics.
Douching is another major cause of yeast infection amongst women. The products used in douching destroy the lactobacilli bacteria and alter the Ph balance of the vagina making women susceptible to yeast infection. The great tight fitting female clothes and synthetic underwear could also contribute to yeast infection in women. A warm and moist environment is ideal for the growth of yeast. Tight fitting clothes and the synthetic underwear don’t allow aeration thus creating too much heat and moisture. Women who are more prone to yeast infection should avoid tight fitting clothes or at least wear them often and opt for cotton underwear other than synthetic ones.
These are the main reasons as to why women are more likely to get yeast infection as compared to men. This does not in anyway meant that women should not be concerned about a yeast infection, it is instead to inform women and help them avoid or keep off from the main causes that predispose them to yeast infection. If all the factors that encourage the thriving of yeast are avoided, women can enjoy a healthy life free from any yeast infection.
